Great-grandson of 2nd class passenger, Richard Otter from Charles M. Otter My father would take us kids to visit my great-grandmother back in the 1960’s and 70’s as she lived until 1972, age 94. One of my earliest memories is being at grandma’s house and asking “Where’s grandpa Otter ?” My great-grandmother was silent but my father cut in and said “He was swallowed by a whale.” Images of Moby Dick and Captain Ahab filled my head. The following week, I was called upon to address my kindergarten class for show and tell and glumly told them that my great-grandfather had been swallowed by a whale. Of course, eventually I learned the truth, that grandpa Otter was a passenger on the White Star Liner “TITANIC”. After my great-grandmother died, we found several letters in a shoe box in her attic. One of them was a letter from the White Star Line notifying her that Richard was a passenger on Titanic and that he was not a survivor, nor was his body recovered. Today I am in possession of these documents. I personally visited the site of Titanic’s sinking in August 1996 aboard the Royal Majesty Cruise ship and plan to return there this summer.
About This Site
This website relates to the story of the Titanic. The Grand Ocean liner sank during its maiden journey on April 15, 1912. The death toll was 1523 of the 2228 passengers and crew members aboard. There were only 705 that survived. But there is more to the story of the Titanic than just the sinking. There is the connection people feel when they open their hearts to the event. Then there is also the Children of the Titanic, the people that are related to a person aboard the ship. In all reality anyone that feels connected in there heart to the Titanic somehow can be called a “Child of the Titanic”. So on that note! Welcome Aboard the Enchanted Titanic!
