Power of the Heart

Hold unto your heart for it will fool you at times
Even when closeness is shared sometimes
Not everything is always what is seems to be
Because our hearts can be fickled you see.

No matter what our brains can profess
It’s our heart that has the power over us
The heart can hurt when you’re in love
Or soar like the wings of a dove

A heart can be cold from the start
Then you see it melt apart
A heart can seem open and receptive
When it is actually deceptive

Hold unto your heart for it will fool you in time
It can change directions on a dime
Not everything is always as it seems to be
Because our hearts have the power and hold the key

I have a dilemma of sorts, and it has all to do with the heart,
I have looked up and down for a smile, but that is only the start.

In the smile I looked for a truth, as I couldn’t stand any more lies,
I asked for the honest truth, but I now feel it will be my demise.

I have found this smile and the honest truth in you,
But I find it is does at times make me feel so blue.

For now I cannot decide if I want the truth to be so bold,
To know that I am not the “ONE”, you want for all time, to hold.

Can I live with your heart being half full, and you love me for now,
Or should I see that it is half empty, as you tell me I am not right somehow.

Do I really want to live again in ignorant bliss, like I have in the past?
Not knowing I am not the “ONE”, then have the truth hit with a sudden blast.

Or do I just want to keep being told that in your heart I am just a guest.
The truth is in this dilemma I know not what will hurt less.

I believe that true love is more than just attraction
It is more than just your heart’s yearning
I feel true love can give you satisfaction
When you work together to keep the fires burning

To work through the hard times and not run
Or go looking for something more thhrilling

If you think that true love just happens to you
Without any effort, then think once more
Because true love is the desire to want to stay true
No matter who or what comes walking past your door.

I miss you, my son, when you are so far away in the overseas land.

Even though you are grown up now I still miss you being around.

I am very proud of you, my son, as you defend us here at home.

Emotions of my love for you do flow
As if they are not under my control
It makes me feel like my heart might be slow
Or miss a beat at times while on patrol.

From the moment I saw you I loved you and my heart flew.
We have had our ups and downs and I thank god the downs have been few.
Recently we have lived through one of the worst downs in our life together.
I felt for the brief moments my life felt cold as arctics winters weather.

I could spend my days cursing the downs we have had,
But without them both, how would we know the good from bad?
